In recent years, the Sahel region (particularly Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger ) has experienced a dramatic security and political crisis. Military juntas have seized power in all three countries, citing the failure of civilian governments to contain jihadist insurgencies. These insurgencies, linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, have expanded their control across vast rural areas, displacing millions and killing tens of thousands. The juntas have broken ties with France (the former colonial power), expelled French and UN forces, and withdrawn from the regional bloc ECOWAS. In their place, they have turned to Russia, inviting mercenaries from the Wagner Group and its successor, the Africa Corps, to provide military support. Russia has deployed thousands of mercenaries across the region, offering air support, intelligence, and ground forces in exchange for access to gold and other resources.
